A Back-reaction Approach to Dark Energy
3 A " homogeneous " LTB model 29 3. C Sewing the photon path 109 Acknowledgments 111 Bibliography 113 vi CONTENTS Introduction This thesis is mainly about how to set up and carry out the idea of back-reaction in a physically meaningful way. Most, if not all, observations are consistent with the cosmic concordance model according to which, today, one-fourth of the mass-energy of the universe is ...
متن کاملDark Energy: back to Newton?
Dark Energy is currently one of the biggest mysteries in science. In this article the origin of the concept is traced as far back as Newton and Hooke in the seventeenth century. Newton considered, along with the inverse square law, a force of attraction that varies linearly with distance. A direct link can be made between this term and Einstein’s cosmological constant, Λ , and this leads to a p...
متن کاملDark Energy from Strings
A long-standing problem of theoretical physics is the exceptionally small value of the cosmological constant Λ ∼ 10−120 measured in natural Planckian units. Here we derive this tiny number from a toroidal string cosmology based on closed strings. In this picture the dark energy arises from the correlation between momentum and winding modes that for short distances has an exponential fall-off wi...
متن کاملDark energy from backreaction
We consider the effect of inhomogeneities on the expansion of the Einstein-de Sitter universe. We find that the backreaction of linear scalar metric perturbations results in apparent dark energy with a mixture of equations of state between 0 and –4/3. We discuss the possibility that backreaction could account for present-day acceleration.
متن کاملBubbles from Dark Energy ?
In a model recently proposed by Albrecht and Skordis it was suggested that the observed accelerated expansion of the universe could be caused by a scalar field which is trapped in a local minimum of an exponential potential modified by a polynomial prefactor. We show that scalar field cosmologies with this kind of local minimum in the potential are stable and do not decay to the true vacuum if ...
